為什麼美國中央政府所在地，要叫哥倫比亞特區(District of Columbia，簡稱D.C.)？
United States這名字，出現在1787年制憲之後。
原本美國是由十三個邦(殖民地Colony)所構成(註２)，
在制憲時，考慮到國權主義(Nation)跟邦權主義(Colony，各邦的獨立性)，
因而妥協，全國政府National government寫成Government of The United States，
改稱邦(Colonies)為州(States)。美國聯邦憲法(註３)的序言：
象徵美國的人物，許多人會想到山姆大叔(註４)，

其實，還有另一張，如下圖：
這一位女性就是哥倫比亞，代表著美國。
而且"哥倫比亞"在美國超常見，就像台灣的中山路，
包含太空梭也會以此命名，當然，你也可叫哥倫比亞號為美國號。
而首都名是美國國父華盛頓在1791年取的。
這樣的問法很有趣，就好像在問：陳先生，你家為什麼叫陳宅？
美國首都之所以在「哥倫比亞特區」，
是因為"美國"原本就叫哥倫比亞Columbia(註１)。
這個名字是紀念哥倫布，義大利文為Christopher Columbus，
因此，將哥倫布Columbus這個字加拉丁文字尾-ia，表示國家(應該叫她哥倫布之國嗎？)。
